Hîrjauca Monastery, founded in the 18th century in the Călinești commune of Orhei district, was among the religious institutions suppressed under Soviet rule and only returned to the Orthodox Church following Moldovan independence in 1991. This coin was issued nine years into that restoration period, part of the National Bank of Moldova's ongoing commemorative program celebrating recovered cultural and religious heritage.
KM#85 is one of several silver 50 Lei pieces from this era sharing identical technical specifications — the monastery series effectively used a single production template across multiple subjects.
