Moldova's protected species numismatic series has documented several endemic and near-endemic fauna with reasonable consistency, but the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) carries particular weight in this context — the species has been on Moldova's Red List of endangered species, its wetland habitats along the Prut and Dniester rivers having contracted sharply through the Soviet-era drainage programs of the mid-twentieth century.
