Eugen Coșeriu, born in Mihăileni, Bălți County in 1921, became one of the twentieth century's most influential theoretical linguists, spending most of his career at the University of Tübingen. His concept of "integral linguistics" reshaped how scholars understood the relationship between language, speech, and knowledge. The National Bank of Moldova issued this coin on the centenary of his birth — a rare instance of a small post-Soviet state claiming intellectual patrimony over a figure who left the region as a teenager and never returned to live there.
