Călărășăuca Monastery, perched above the Dniester in northern Moldova, dates to the seventeenth century and survived Soviet suppression only by being repurposed as a psychiatric hospital during the communist period — a fate shared by many Orthodox religious sites across the USSR. It was returned to the church following Moldovan independence in 1991, and this coin was issued less than a decade into that restoration, part of the National Bank's broader series commemorating the country's ecclesiastical and cultural heritage during a period of intense national identity-building.
