Issued as part of Moldova's ongoing Orthodox sacred architecture series, this coin commemorates the Annunciation Church in Chișinău, one of the city's older surviving Orthodox structures. Moldova has used its numismatic program aggressively since independence to assert a distinct national cultural identity separate from both Romanian and Soviet narratives — the choice of ecclesiastical subjects reflects the outsized role the Orthodox Church played in cultural continuity through the Soviet period, when many Moldovan churches were shuttered, repurposed, or demolished.
KM#59 was struck at a low mintage typical of the series, aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation.
