| Additional information |
Alexei Mateevici died in 1917 at twenty-six, a Romanian-language poet and Orthodox priest who had served as a military chaplain in the Russian Imperial Army during the First World War. His poem Limba Noastră — written that same year — became the national anthem of Moldova upon independence in 1991, making him a figure the Moldovan state has a particular institutional interest in commemorating. This coin was issued on the centenary of both the poem and his death.
