Alexandru Donici (1806–1865) was Moldova's foremost fabulist, adapting Aesop and La Fontaine into Romanian verse while simultaneously serving as a magistrate — a dual career that gave his moral fables an unusually litigious edge. This issue appeared in 2006 to mark the bicentennial of his birth, part of the National Bank of Moldova's ongoing commemorative program celebrating figures largely unknown outside Romanian-language literary circles.
