Alexandru Bernardazzi was a Swiss-born architect who spent the bulk of his career in Odessa before relocating to Chișinău in 1878, where he designed a significant portion of the city's late-19th-century civic architecture. The National Bank of Moldova has issued commemorative silver pieces honoring figures whose contributions to Moldovan cultural heritage predate the republic's existence by over a century — Bernardazzi died in 1902, before Moldova as a political entity had any coherent form.
