Moldova's first independent banknote series, of which this is a mid-denomination, was designed and printed by the Canadian Bank Note Company in Ottawa — an unusual choice that reflected the difficulty newly independent post-Soviet states faced in securing European printing contracts quickly. The series launched in 1992, the same year the country was still managing the tail end of the Transnistrian War.
Pick 14 went through multiple signature varieties across its long run, spanning over two decades before the series was retired. Signature pairs are the primary distinguishing factor between earlier and later issues.
