The Golden Fleece coinage draws on the Colchian myth cycle, in which the ancient kingdom of Colchis — occupying what is now western Georgia — was the destination of Jason and the Argonauts. Georgian national historiography has long treated this myth as external confirmation of the region's ancient wealth and cultural significance, a point the National Bank has leaned into across multiple commemorative series since independence in 1991.
KM#98 is part of a broader Georgian gold program that expanded notably in the mid-2000s alongside the country's post-Rose Revolution economic restructuring under Saakashvili.
