Myanmar's 1999 coinage was struck under the military junta known as the State Peace and Development Council, which had renamed Burma and its institutions — including the central bank — following the brutal suppression of the 1988 pro-democracy uprising. International sanctions during this period restricted the country's access to foreign minting facilities, and production remained domestic.
