Malawi's Reserve Bank relied heavily on Giesecke & Devrient throughout this period, and the Leipzig firm produced the bulk of the country's circulating paper during the early 2000s. The 50 Kwacha at this denomination had real purchasing weight in a country where GDP per capita sat below $200 annually — these notes moved through hands constantly and honest uncirculated survivors from the 2001–2003 window are harder to find than the catalog numbers suggest.
Pick 45 carried forward a security specification — watermark plus thread — that was already considered minimal by international standards at the time of issue.
