These coins were struck in the early years of the Turkish Republic under Atatürk's sweeping modernization program, which included wholesale replacement of Ottoman monetary conventions. The .830 silver standard used here was a deliberate departure from Ottoman-era fineness, chosen to align Turkish coinage more closely with contemporary European practice.
Production ran only three years before the type was discontinued — part of a broader pattern of frequent design and specification changes throughout the 1930s as the young republic experimented with its monetary identity.
