Issued to mark the 90th anniversary of the Estonian Declaration of Independence on February 24, 1918, this coin was struck at a moment when Estonia was still adjusting to the reintroduction of the krooni — itself only restored in 1992 after fifty years of Soviet-imposed monetary suppression. The Bank of Estonia has consistently used gold commemoratives as vehicles for national historical assertion, and the 90th anniversary issue falls squarely in that tradition.
Mintages for Bank of Estonia gold commemoratives of this period are typically very low, often under 5,000 pieces.
