Ríkissjóður Íslands — the Icelandic Treasury — appears as the nominal authority on this issue, but the notes were printed in Copenhagen and functioned through Landsbankinn, reflecting the awkward dual-sovereignty arrangement Iceland maintained with Denmark until full independence in 1944. Christian X's appearance here is deliberate: he was simultaneously King of Denmark and, under the 1918 Act of Union, King of Iceland as a separate realm, a constitutional fiction that satisfied neither side for long.
Gerhard Heilmann is better known as a Danish ornithologist and scientific illustrator — his banknote design work is the less-discussed side of an unusually varied career.
