Sweden's parliament had stripped the monarchy of nearly all remaining political authority just one year before this coin was issued, under the 1974 Instrument of Government that reduced the king to a ceremonial figurehead. The wedding of Carl XVI Gustaf and Silvia Sommerlath in June 1976 offered the Riksbank a rare occasion for a commemorative silver issue — the first royal wedding coin in Swedish modern coinage.
Sommerlath was a West German national, which generated genuine public debate at the time about a foreign queen consort.
