Östergötlands Enskilda Bank was one of Sweden's provincial private banks operating under the 1824 enskilda bank legislation, which permitted note issuance against the bank's own capital rather than government backing. By the 1890s, these institutions were already living on borrowed time — the Riksbank's monopoly on note issue was steadily tightening, and most enskilda banks had ceased circulation by 1904.
