Norway hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer — the first Winter Games held just two years after the previous edition, a deliberate IOC decision to offset the Summer and Winter cycles following the 1992 Barcelona Games. This coin was struck in 1992, a full two years ahead of the event, as part of a multi-year commemorative program the Royal Norwegian Mint launched to fund and promote the Games through phased collector releases.
