Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani was a coal mining operation on Svalbard, and like several Arctic mining companies of the period, it issued its own scrip currency for use within the Spitsbergen settlements — a practical necessity given the islands' physical and economic isolation from the Norwegian mainland. This note circulated in a closed company-town economy where workers had limited means of spending outside the company's own stores and facilities.
Emil Moestue in Oslo printed the series, a firm better known for commercial and official work rather than banknote production. The watermark security feature is modest for scrip of this type, suggesting the primary concern was internal accountability rather than deterring sophisticated forgery in a population measured in hundreds.
