Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani was the dominant Norwegian coal operation on Svalbard from its founding in 1916, and by the early 1920s it had effectively become a company town operation — the remote Arctic settlements of Longyearbyen and Svea had no access to ordinary Norwegian banking infrastructure. These notes circulated exclusively within the company's Arctic settlements as a closed scrip system, redeemable only at the company store and valid nowhere else on earth.
The 1924–25 series is the most substantial denomination in the Store Norske scrip issues. High-value notes in isolated scrip systems rarely survive in any quantity — workers had strong incentive to spend or redeem them, not save them.
