Vienna's municipal government issued emergency currency in 1918 as the Austro-Hungarian monetary system collapsed under the weight of war and imminent imperial dissolution. These Stadtgemeinde Wien notes were Notgeld in the truest sense — stopgap instruments issued by a city administration that had no legal authority to print money under normal circumstances, filling a vacuum left by the hoarding of coin and the breakdown of central bank distribution.
The 50 Kronen denomination was among the higher values for municipal issues of this period, reflecting how badly small-denomination currency had disappeared from daily commerce by late 1918.
