Issued to mark the 1,140th anniversary of the arrival of Cyril and Methodius in Great Moravia, a mission dispatched by the Byzantine Emperor Michael III at the request of Prince Rastislav, who wanted liturgical independence from Frankish ecclesiastical influence. The brothers brought the Glagolitic script with them — the first alphabet designed specifically for a Slavic language — and translated key religious texts into Old Church Slavonic, a language that would underpin Slavic literacy for centuries.
Slovakia claimed this heritage with particular intensity after independence in 1993, and the brothers appear on the national coat of arms. KM#68 was struck at the Kremnica Mint, which has operated continuously on the same site since 1328.
