Issued as part of Czechoslovakia's long-running wildlife conservation series, this coin was struck the year the last wild-born Przewalski's horse had already been gone from the Mongolian steppe for nearly three decades — the species had been declared extinct in the wild in 1969. Prague Zoo was among a handful of European institutions running coordinated captive breeding programs that would eventually make reintroduction possible, with the first horses returned to Mongolia in 1992, five years after this coin appeared.
