Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav, the Slovak poet honored here, died in 1921 — this coin marks the fiftieth anniversary of his death. He spent much of his career writing in an era when Slovak cultural expression was actively suppressed under Magyar administrative policy, and his work in the Slovak vernacular was itself a political act. The 1971 issue falls squarely in the post-Dubček normalization period, when the Czechoslovak government leaned heavily on pan-Slavic cultural figures to assert legitimacy after the 1968 Soviet intervention.
