Issued to mark the tenth anniversary of Czechoslovakia's liberation from Nazi occupation in May 1945, this coin appeared during a period when the Communist Party was actively reshaping national memory — recasting Soviet liberation as the defining event of modern Czech and Slovak identity, with the Western Allied contribution systematically downplayed in official commemorations. The 1955 anniversary fell just two years after Stalin's death, when Gottwald's own death had left the party in an awkward transitional moment.
