Transnistria — the narrow strip of land between the Dniester River and the Ukrainian border — declared independence from Moldova in 1990, though no United Nations member state recognizes it. Its coinage program is partly functional, partly a sovereignty signal directed at the international community. The non-magnetic distinction in KM#53 reflects a mid-series composition adjustment; the earlier magnetic variant (Schön#5.1) had caused problems with vending equipment and automated sorting systems used in cross-border trade with Ukraine.
