Additional information

The split reference — Y#58.1 and Y#58.2 — reflects a portrait change made in 1905, distinguishing the earlier bare-headed effigy from the later one. Production ran almost continuously across two decades, interrupted only by the Russo-Japanese War's drain on treasury resources and the industrial disruptions following the 1905 Revolution. The St. Petersburg Mint was operating under significant pressure during those years, and output figures fluctuate sharply between issues.

By 1914, silver coinage effectively vanished from circulation as hoarding accelerated at the outbreak of war. Most surviving examples of the later dates saw minimal use before being pulled from commerce entirely.
