The Ekaterinburg branch of the State Bank began issuing its own local currency in 1918 as the Bolshevik government's grip on the Urals deteriorated and central supply of banknotes collapsed entirely. Ekaterinburg was then a focal point of the Russian Civil War — the city where Nicholas II and his family were shot in July 1918, weeks before White Army forces under the Siberian Provisional Government captured it in late July. These small-denomination notes were emergency instruments issued in the chaos between those two events.
The series is known to exist with varying quality of impression, a direct consequence of hasty local production under wartime conditions.
