Prisoner of war camp scrip from Siberia in 1919 occupies a genuinely obscure corner of notaphily, and this Wohlfahrts Organisation Baterenaja piece is a prime example of why. The welfare organizations administering PoW camps across Siberia during the Russian Civil War — holding men captured years earlier on the Eastern Front, now stranded by the collapse of both the German war effort and any coherent repatriation infrastructure — issued their own internal currencies to manage canteen transactions and reduce theft of hard currency from an already chaotic monetary environment.
Campbell 6855 is among the lesser-documented issues in this category. Surviving examples are rare simply because camp scrip was designed for short-term internal use and had no redemption value once the facility closed or repatriation finally occurred.
