The convertible mark was introduced in 1998 under the Dayton Agreement's financial architecture, pegged to the Deutsche Mark and subsequently to the euro at a fixed rate of 1.95583 KM — a peg that has held without adjustment since. The currency itself was designed as a deliberately neutral instrument for a country whose three constituent peoples could not agree on whose historical figures should appear on banknotes, which is why the series relies on architectural motifs rather than portraits.
Oberthur Fiduciaire has held the printing contract for this series across multiple decades, with the 2012 onward issue representing a security refresh rather than a redesign.
