Laos had no athletes at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics — or at any Winter Games during this period — making this issue purely a revenue-generating collector piece rather than any form of national sporting commemoration. The Bank of the Lao P.D.R. produced several such themed silver issues in the late 1980s, contracted through foreign minting agents, targeting the Western and Asian numismatic market rather than domestic circulation.
The KM#35.1 designation implies a variant exists; a .925 composition strike was also produced under this program.
