Issued to mark a decade since the Pathet Lao abolished the monarchy and proclaimed the Lao People's Democratic Republic on December 2, 1975, effectively ending six centuries of royal rule. The transition followed the communist seizure of power across Indochina that year, with the Pathet Lao moving swiftly once Saigon and Phnom Penh had fallen. King Savang Vatthana abdicated and was subsequently sent to a "re-education" camp in Houaphanh Province, where he died — the exact date still unacknowledged by the government.
Virtually no domestic collector market existed for commemorative silver in Laos at the time; pieces like this were minted primarily for export sale through European distributors.
