| Reverse description | Central field depicts a detailed view of Pha That Luang (the Great Stupa of Vientiane), Laos's most sacred national monument, shown with its distinctive golden spire and surrounding smaller stupas, flanked by tropical palm trees and flowering plants rendered in fine engraving. Below the stupa, decorative foliate scrollwork frames the large numeral '50' in the lower center of the field. Directly beneath the numeral, the denomination in Lao script appears. The coin's border is decorated with a continuous ring of beads. |

| Additional information |
The Lao PDR was proclaimed on December 2, 1975, when the Pathet Lao abolished the 600-year-old monarchy and forced King Savang Vatthana to abdicate — the last king of the Lao royal line. This 1985 issue marks the decade since that transition. Silver commemoratives from the Lao PDR in this period were minted almost exclusively for the export collector market; domestic circulation of silver coinage was essentially nonexistent in a country still operating a command economy under heavy Vietnamese and Soviet influence.
