Issued to mark the 200th anniversary of Nikolai Gogol's birth, this coin draws on his 1831–32 collection Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka, the breakthrough work that made his reputation in St. Petersburg almost overnight. Gogol wrote the stories while living in the capital, constructing a romanticized Ukrainian village world largely from memory and family correspondence — he had already left Poltava region for good by the time the first volume appeared.
The 500-gram format placed it firmly in Ukraine's large-format collector series of the late 2000s, struck in limited numbers for the commemorative market rather than any circulation purpose.
