Issued in the same year Ukraine completed its transition to the hryvnia as a stable national currency — a process that had begun in 1996 after years of hyperinflation under the karbovanets — this gold piece was part of the NBU's early commemorative program, which leaned heavily on religious and cultural themes as the country reasserted its Orthodox Christian identity following Soviet suppression.
The Farouk reference (Fr#11) places it within the broader gold type census, though mintages for NBU commemoratives of this period were extremely low, often under a thousand pieces.
