50 Heller Wolfsegg

Wolfsegg am Hausruck is a small Upper Austrian coal-mining town, and this 50 Heller Notgeld was issued precisely because that industry created acute small-change shortages in the immediate postwar years — workers needed fractional currency for daily transactions that the central banking system simply could not supply. Hundreds of Austrian municipalities issued similar emergency scrip between 1919 and 1921, but Wolfsegg's notes are tied directly to the mining community rather than an agricultural or market-town economy.

Josef Rockstroh's signature as Bürgermeister gives the note its legal standing under local authority. Validity was typically time-limited, with redemption enforced before the stabilization of Austrian currency under the new Krone regime.
