| Descrizione del rovescio | Printed entirely in green on plain paper, the reverse carries the full authorizing text of the Notgeld issue within the same geometric arrow-and-diamond border used on the obverse. The issuer's name 'WINDHAAG' is set in large display lettering as the typographic centerpiece, flanked above by 'DIE GEMEINDE' and below by 'BEI FREISTADT'. Two manuscript signature facsimiles appear in the lower portion under the respective titles 'DER BÜRGERMEISTER STELLVERTRETER' and 'DER BÜRGERMEISTER', with a redemption notice at the foot of the note. |

Windhaag bei Freistadt is a small market commune in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of similar municipalities it issued emergency paper money — Notgeld — during the severe coin shortage that followed Austria's defeat in the First World War. The 50 Heller denomination places this squarely in the workhorse range of local Notgeld: enough for small transactions, too low to hoard seriously. By 1920 many Austrian communes were on their second or third Notgeld series, the earlier issues having actually circulated to exhaustion.
These Upper Austrian municipal pieces were frequently redeemed and withdrawn once the national coinage situation stabilized in the early 1920s, which is why genuinely circulated examples can be harder to find than the collector-targeted series produced elsewhere.
