Below, in smaller roman type, the text reads 'löst diesen Gutschein über', followed by the denomination '50' in large red numerals flanked by the word 'Heller' in blackletter on either side. The redemption clause 'bis zur Einziehung in gesetzlichem Bargeld ein' appears in the lower half, with the place and date 'Landgemeinde Werfen i. August 1920' below. Werfen Land is a small municipality in the Salzburg-Umgebung district, and this 50 Heller note is one of the thousands of Austrian Notgeld pieces issued in the immediate postwar years when the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy left local economies without reliable small change. The Kiesel print shop in Salzburg handled a substantial number of these regional commissions, and the Kronberger design credit is worth noting — Hans Kronberger contributed artwork to several Salzburg-area issues during this period, giving some of the more obscure municipal notes a degree of craft rarely expected at this denomination.
The JPR1172 series is thinly documented. Collector interest in Werfen Land specifically is low, which keeps prices modest but also means population data is unreliable.
