The upper portion carries a four-line verse in blackletter script attributed to 'Just.', followed by a substantial text block in the same typeface explaining the issue: the municipality of Weißenkirchen in der Wachau issued Kassenscheine totalling 64,000 Kronen, redeemable without interest until 30 November 1920 and exchangeable for legal tender between 15 and 30 November 1920. A final line warns that counterfeiting is punishable by law. |

Weissenkirchen in der Wachau issued this 50 Heller note as part of the Austrian Notgeld wave that swept through municipalities between 1919 and 1921 — a direct consequence of the postwar coin shortage that left small communities unable to make change. The Marktgemeinde effectively became a temporary issuing authority by necessity, not by any formal monetary authority granted from Vienna.
Wachau Notgeld from this period is disproportionately well-preserved because much of it was absorbed by collectors almost immediately upon issue, meaning many examples never circulated at all.
