Waxenberg is a tiny settlement in Upper Austria, and its 1920 emergency note belongs to the vast Notgeld phenomenon that swept German-speaking Europe after World War I left small municipalities without adequate coinage for everyday transactions. The Austrian federal government's inability to supply small-denomination currency in sufficient quantity forced even the most obscure rural communities to print their own provisional scrip — legally tolerated, locally redeemable, and technically worthless beyond the issuing parish.
The Jaksch/Pick reference JPR1144II places this squarely in the second series of Waxenberg issues, implying at least one prior emission.
