Vorderseitenbeschreibung The obverse is printed in dark ink on plain paper and presents a finely engraved panoramic vignette of the town of Wallern set within an oval cartouche with scrollwork border, showing church steeples, rooftops, and surrounding hills in a detailed landscape composition. The issuer's name appears in Gothic script within a black rectangular panel at the top centre. Denomination shields reading '50 Heller' are placed symmetrically at the left and right, with a fine vertical-line guilloche pattern filling the background field. An anti-counterfeiting warning in Gothic script runs along the lower margin.

Rückseitenbeschreibung The reverse is printed in dark green ink on cream-coloured paper and carries the full text of the redemption obligation in Gothic Fraktur script, stating that the Municipality of Wallern guarantees to redeem the note in lawful currency until 31 December 1920. A single-rule rectangular border frames the field, and the printer's imprint appears in small type at the foot. The facsimile signature of the mayor, J. Brandstätter, is printed below the guarantee text.

Anmerkungen

Wallern — almost certainly Wallern im Burgenland — issued this Heller notgeld during the acute coin shortage that gripped Austria from around 1916 onward, when the imperial government effectively stopped producing small-denomination coins as metal went to the war effort. Municipalities were left to solve the problem themselves, and thousands did, flooding the country with locally printed scrip of wildly varying quality. Prieckel of Steyr was a small regional printer producing issues for several Upper Austrian and Lower Austrian communities during this period.

J. Brandstätter's signature as issuing authority marks this as a genuine municipal instrument rather than a later philatelic reprint, which were common for Austrian notgeld by 1921.
