Waldzell is a small market commune in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities, it issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — during the severe coin shortages that followed World War One. The 50 Heller denomination places this squarely in the first wave of Austrian local issues, when even the smallest communities needed fractional currency to keep markets functioning.
Dorfinger's design credit is locally sourced, which is typical of the smaller Upper Austrian communes that bypassed Vienna printers entirely and worked with regional designers and print shops. The Jaksch/Pick reference JPR1135b1 indicates this is the second variant of the primary type — likely a color or paper distinction from the first issue.
