Waidhofen an der Ybbs was among the hundreds of Austrian municipalities forced to print their own emergency currency — Notgeld — after the First World War collapsed the imperial monetary system and coins vanished from circulation almost entirely. This 50 Heller note is a local production in the most literal sense: printed by the town's own press, the Druckerei Waidhofen a. d. Ybbs GmbH, rather than contracted out to a major Vienna or Graz printer. The design credit to architect J. B. Bukovics and Knell is unusual — architectural firms rarely appear in printer's margins on Notgeld issues, and suggests the town treated this as a civic design commission rather than a purely functional emergency measure.
