The Wachau communities issued their own emergency currency in 1920 not from financial desperation alone but from a conscious effort to promote the wine-growing region as a tourist destination — an unusual motive for a municipal scrip series. Spitz an der Donau, a small market town on the south bank between Melk and Krems, participated in this coordinated regional issue alongside several neighboring communes.
