One of thousands of Austrian municipal Notgeld issues from the postwar inflationary period, when the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left local governments scrambling to fill a severe coin shortage. Vöcklamarkt's series was designed by a local figure identified only as Kragowfer — almost certainly not a professional printmaker — and produced within the municipality itself rather than by one of the specialist Notgeld printers working out of Vienna or Graz at the time.
The municipal seal substitutes for any formal security printing. It was enough to deter casual forgery in a town of a few thousand people.
