Ungenach is a village in Upper Austria with a population that barely reached four figures in 1920. Like hundreds of similarly sized Austrian municipalities, it issued its own emergency paper money — Notgeld — during the currency chaos following the collapse of the Habsburg Empire. Small denominations like this 50 Heller piece were meant to address the acute shortage of coins, which were being hoarded or had simply vanished from circulation.
The JPR1092b designation within the Jaksch reference indicates a variant within the Ungenach series — likely a color or text difference from the 'a' type. Village Notgeld from this period was often produced locally in very small print runs, making individual variants genuinely difficult to attribute with confidence.
