Stockerau's 50 Heller notgeld belongs to the vast wave of municipal emergency currency that flooded Austria in 1919–1920, driven by a crippling coin shortage in the chaotic aftermath of Habsburg dissolution. The Stadtgemeinde — the town's own municipal authority — issued these rather than any banking institution, which was common practice for smaller Lower Austrian towns scrambling to keep everyday commerce functional when central supply had broken down entirely.
The Jaksc/Pick reference JPR1038-50 places this firmly within the documented Lower Austrian series, though survival rates for Stockerau notgeld vary considerably by denomination.
