Opmerkingen

Stefanshart is a small rural municipality in Lower Austria, and this note is a product of the Notgeld emergency — the acute coin shortage that followed Austria's defeat in the First World War and the dissolution of the Habsburg economy. Thousands of Austrian municipalities issued their own small-denomination paper in 1920 and 1921 to fill the gap left by hoarded and melted coinage. Stefanshart's example is among the more obscure of these issues, signed by three local officials including the vice-mayor and a town councillor.

The three-signature authentication format was common in Lower Austrian municipal Notgeld and served as a hedge against forgery in communities where the issuing authority had no formal banking infrastructure.
