Sankt Oswald is a small municipality in Lower Austria's Waldviertel, and this 50 Heller note belongs to the wave of Notgeld issued across Austria between 1919 and 1921 when post-war coin shortages made small change functionally impossible to obtain. The printer, Siedler of Pöggstall, was a local operation servicing several Waldviertel communities during this period — not a specialist banknote printer, which shows in the typography.
Three signatories authenticate the note: Bürgermeister Ignaz Leonhartsberger alongside Karl Scheuchenstuhl and Leopold Fischl. Municipal Notgeld of this type was legally issued under Austrian emergency provisions and redeemable by the issuing commune, though in practice many were never presented for redemption.
