Sankt Martin im Mühlkreis is a small Upper Austrian commune in the Mühlviertel, and this 50 Heller note is one of hundreds of Austrian municipal Notgeld issues that flooded local circulation between 1920 and 1921, when coin shortages made small-denomination exchange nearly impossible. The series designation "St. Martin - Neuhaus" distinguishes it from other Sankt Martin issues elsewhere in Austria — Neuhaus being the market settlement within the municipality.
L. Haase of Linz printed several Upper Austrian Notgeld series during this period. The Jaksc catalogue reference 127c-50.46 places this among a numbered variant group, suggesting multiple printings or paper stocks within the same commune's issue run.
